About Me

Emily Chen

MyChineseRecipe has been my small dream for years, and I am finally going to fulfill it this year.

About Me

I am Emily Chen, the founder of MyChineseRecipe.

I was born in Shanghai, have traveled to many countries and tasted various cuisines. Then I find some Chinese recipes listed might not be right or complicated.

I establish this website to share authentic and simple local Chinese recipes and help you to learn Chinese cuisine quickly.  Hope it would bring you the true flavors of Chinese cuisine at home.

My Cooking Journey

My cooking journey dated back to 2014. That year, I went to New Zealand and started my new life there. The first problem I met is cooking. If you have Chinese friends who studied in your country, you might know that we don't really cook at home. Cooking is always our parents' work. For me, it was my Mum do the work and she barely let me into the kitchen. But I was a foodie, always searching for good restaurant every weekend when I was in Shanghai.

Luckily, I met a chief-to-be at the hostel, who was taking western cooking courses in Auckland that week. Every time he cooked, I would help and watch closely to learn how he did the work.

Fortunately, I managed to cook by myself when he left. I thought it's really magic because the time is too short, just one week, but I made it. I might get some talents I think.

Cooking Feeling

For cooking, when you get the feeling, you will know how immediately as long as there is right recipes. But if you don't get that feeling, it's going to take long time before you can manage it.

I might not be good at taking photos or videos but the taste of my recipe is something you should not miss. I love the dishes I made, so I want to share to you, my friend, and I am sure you will like these Chinese food.

Well, if there is a chance, I highly recommend you to travel to China, even just for eating, it worth the price. So many delicious food here!

Downsides

Well, there was downside.  I gained 15kg+ weight in just 6 months after my arrival. I never knew that the food I cooked could be this delicious. I still enjoyed to try all recipes but I changed my strategy. I shared these to my friends.

All the food I made, dishes, cookies and cakes, both my international friends and Chinese friends, they all love it and asked for recipes. That encouraged me a lot.

Pursuit of My Dream

I have been in New Zealand for 2 years and then came back to Shanghai. Now it's a 10-year anniversary. I was a general manager for a online marketplace company and maybe it was time for me to pursue my own dream.

There is a saying in China.

"Whatever happens, you should still have dreams. What if they come true? "
